The City and its Moving Images: Resistance to the cinematic

We are pleased to announce the second public event of our collaboration with Birkbeck: The City and its Moving Images. On Tuesday 22nd October, Shepherd Steiner will discuss resistance to the cinematic in the film and photography of three Vancouver artists: Rodney Graham, Ian Wallace and Jeff Wall.

‘All three artists use the “filmic” and the “photographic” as key binaries in a pitched battle against the far larger institution of cinema. Graham’s thoughts on the issue brush up against and confirm his friends’ own negative engagement with the institution from very early on. This is precisely what is unique about the interest in film in Vancouver in the early 1970s. The analytics of cinema are bound up in a hard and fast resistance to cinematic form that Graham shared with Wallace and Wall, and which drove all three to inspired heights of inventiveness with respect to the picture form.’ – Shepherd Steiner
