Patricia Lee in conversation with Briony Fer – Sturtevant: Warhol Marilyn
We are pleased to announce that on Monday 22 February Patricia Lee will be in conversation with Briony Fer at Central Saint Martins discussing the work of Elaine Sturtevant. For this event, Lee will be drawing from her One Work book Sturtevant: Warhol Marilyn which focuses on how Sturtevant’s work reveals a decisive shift in thinking about artistic authorship and the originality of the contemporary artwork.
Sturtevant (as she preferred to be called) remade and exhibited works by other artists, among them Andy Warhol’s 1962 silkscreen portraits of Marilyn Monroe. In her book, Lee discusses the way Sturtevant’s methodology challenged contemporary interpretations of modernism, and addresses the cultural significance of both Warhol and Marilyn as well as the consequences of celebrity culture for art practice.
Patricia Lee is a writer, lecturer and scholar of contemporary art.
Briony Fer is a writer and Professor of History of Art at UCL.
