Launch of Afterall Journal Issue 46 and ‘Artist-to-Artist: Independent Art Festivals in Chiang Mai 1992–98’
On the occasion of the publication of Afterall journal issue 46 ‘Reconstruction: Performance and Collective Action’ and Artist-to-Artist: Independent Art Festivals in Chiang Mai 1992–98 of the Exhibition Histories series, NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore is hosting a launch event.
In the context of its twentieth anniversary, Charles Esche, co-founding director of the Afterall Research Centre, will give a presentation on the organisation’s history. This will be followed by a conversation with Afterall journal editors focusing on Southeast Asian artistic practices and potential cross-cultural narratives with other practices from the southern hemisphere. Following this, David Teh and David Morris will discuss their recently edited book Artist-to-Artist: Independent Art Festivals in Chiang Mai 1992–98, the first comprehensive survey on a series of festivals known as Chiang Mai Social Installation emerging amidst a regional constellation of artists’ initiatives and independent spaces. To conclude the celebration, there will be readings by Peter Sipeli and 1angrynative, as well as a jam session with Lee Wen, an artists featured in Afterall issue 46.
