Artist’s Talk: Charles Gaines
One of the foremost contributors to Conceptualism both in the US and internationally, artist Charles Gaines will discuss his work and practice as part of the Art Programme guest lecture series at Central Saint Martins.
Training as an artist in the 1960s, Gaines’ extensive body of work across different mediums employs structured processes, including rule-based and serial methods, in order to draw on questions of politics, aesthetics and meaning. Within this, concepts of race, identity and representation form a central part of his critical and formal interrogations.
Charles Gaines’ work is held in collections that include the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Studio Museum in Harlem; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Gaines has taught throughout his career and is currently a faculty member of the California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles.
