Afterall Journal Issue 46 Launch: ‘Premises for Burmese Contemporary Art’

On the occasion of the publication of Afterall journal issue 46, ‘Reconstruction: Performance and Collective Action’, we are pleased to host a launch event at Lokanat Galleries, Yangon. Using Yin Ker’s essay ‘Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? Premises for Burmese Contemporary Art’ as a catalyst, the event will discuss the complexities of the Burmese contemporary art scene.

The event will include a public conversation between the Yin Ker and the artist Po Po, whose voice and insights were foregrounded in ‘Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? Premises for Burmese Contemporary Art’ alongside Min Thein Sung, Tun Win Aung & Wah Nu. This will be followed by presentations by Ana Bilbao and Anca Rujoiu, NTU CCA Singapore, members of Afterall journal’s editorial team who will introduce their research on artists’ initiatives.

Issue 46 was conceived in Singapore in a collective effort by the editorial team (Ute Meta Bauer, Ana Bilbao, Charles Esche, Anders Kreuger, David Morris, Anca Rujoiu and Charles Stankievech). This issue traverses different geographies and contexts, from Southeast Asia to the Americas with a focus on artistic practices that take a clear position against the long-lasting endurance of oppressive systems, be it racial, patriarchal or colonial.

Yin Ker’s text critically reflects on the development and status quo of Burmese contemporary art, as well as the Burmese artists’ opportunities and challenges in the face of global trends and local intricacies. ‘Where Do We Come From?’ has been translated into Burmese by Zune Ei Htet, download PDF.

Printed copies of the essay in both languages will be available during the launch. The event will be primarily conducted in English with live Burmese translation.

ဤအခမ္းအနားတြင္ ယဥ္ကာေရးသားခဲ့သည့္ ‘တို႕ေတြ ဘယ္ကလာ၊ ဘယ္သူ၊ ဘယ္ကိုဦးတည္တာ။ ျမန္မာ့ေခတ္ၿပိဳင္အႏုပညာအတြက္ အဆိုေတြ’ ဟူေသာ ေဆာင္းပါးကို ဗဟိုျပဳ၍ ျမန္မာ့ေခတ္ၿပိဳင္အႏုပညာေလာကအတြင္းမွ ႐ႈပ္ေထြးမႈ ပဋိပကၡမ်ားကို ေဆြးေႏြးတင္ဆက္သြားပါမည္။ ယဥ္ကာ၏ အဆိုပါ ေဆာင္းပါးတြင္ ျမန္မာ့ေခတ္ၿပိဳင္အႏုပညာ၏ တိုးတက္ေျပာင္းလဲမႈမ်ားႏွင့္ လက္ရွိ အေျခအေနတို႕ကို ေ၀ဖန္ဆန္းစစ္ထားၿပီး ဆက္လက္၍ ကမာၻ႕ေရစီးေၾကာင္းႏွင့္ အတြင္းေရးျပႆနာမ်ားၾကားမွ ျမန္မာ့အႏုပညာရွင္မ်ားအတြက္ ရရွိလာေသာ အခြင့္အလမ္းမ်ားႏွင့္အတူ ႀကံဳေတြ႕ေနရသည္႕ စိန္ေခၚမႈျပႆနာမ်ားကို ေလ့လာသုံးသပ္ထားပါသည္။ ဤေဆာင္းပါးမွ သုံးသပ္တင္ျပခ်က္မ်ားကို ျမန္မာ့အႏုပညာရွင္မ်ားျဖစ္ၾကေသာ ပိုပို၊ ထြန္း၀င္းေအာင္၊ ၀ါႏုႏွင့္ မင္းသိမ္းစြန္တို႕၏ အေတြးအျမင္၊ ေဆြးေႏြးခ်က္မ်ားအေပၚအေျခခံ၍ တင္ဆက္ထားပါသည္။ စာမူရွင္ ယဥ္ကာႏွင့္ အႏုပညာရွင္ ပိုပိုတို႕၏ ေဆြးေႏြးခ်က္မ်ားကိုလည္း အခမ္းအနားအစီအစဥ္အတိုင္း ျပဳလုပ္သြားမည္ျဖစ္ၿပီး က်န္အႏုပညာရွင္သုံးဦးလည္း ပါ၀င္တက္ေရာက္ပါမည္။ အခမ္းအနား၏ ဒုတိယပိုင္းတြင္ Afterall ဂ်ာနယ္၏ စာတည္းအဖြဲ႕မွ Ana Bilbao ႏွင့္ Anca Rujoiu တို႕၏ သုေတသနစာတမ္းျဖစ္ေသာ အႏုပညာရွင္မ်ား၏ ကိုယ္ထူကိုယ္ထလႈပ္ရွားမႈမ်ားႏွင့္ ပတ္သက္ၿပီး မိတ္ဆက္တင္ျပသြားပါမည္။
