Afterall Film Club: Laura Mulvey

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Afterall Film Club at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Starting with Laura Mulvey on Tuesday 1 May 2012, invited artists and writers will introduce a film of their choice, which will be discussed following its full screening.

Laura Mulvey is a filmmaker and theorist renowned for the seminal essay ‘Visual Pleasure in Narrative Cinema’ (first published in Screen, Autumn 1975). In the late 1970s and early 1980s, she co-directed six films with Peter Wollen including Riddles of the Sphinx (1978) and Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti (1980). Her books and essays on cinema developed from the concerns of radical politics in the aftermath of the upheavals of 1968 and she has pioneered the use of semiotic and psychoanalytic frameworks to explore questions of representation in cinema and wider culture, particularly the political and aesthetic issues posed by feminism.

Afterall Film Club is free and will take place eight times a year at CSM’s new building. Participants scheduled to chair the club include Dexter Dalwood, Mark Leckey and Nina Power.
