The Cognitive Plantation
In collaboration with Museu de Arte de São Paulo we have been building a critical forum for cultural theorists, curators and artists to raise questions and formulate proposals for the reinterpretation of exhibitions and museum collections in non-canonical ways. In this essay, with reference to radical Black transfeminism, Jota Mombaça posits the idea of the ‘cognitive Plantation’ as a means of describing the continued systems of enslavement to which Black lives are subjected in the present, and asks how its parameters might be escaped.
